Eco-Schools Handbooks
The following three Eco-Schools handbooks supports schools in their alignment with the goals of the Greening Education Partnership (GEP), particularly in working towards the Green Flag. This is a recognised award for schools demonstrating excellence in sustainability. These handbooks have been produced as a three-part series including:
Teacher Handbook - practical guide on how to implement the Eco-Schools programme in a learning environment.
Climate Resilience and School Safety Handbook – supporting schools to prepare for and respond to climate-related risks.
Early Years Handbook – focusing on sustainability in early childhood education.
Teacher Handbook
This handbook is a practical guide on how to implement the Eco-Schools programme in a learning environment. At its core is the Seven-Step Framework which is a simple, structured approach to embed sustainability across school life supported by advice, examples and activities which can guide along their Eco-Schools journey.
Climate Resilience & School Safety (CRSS) Handbook
The purpose of this handbook is to provide Eco-Schools with a clear and practical framework for addressing immediate school safety and climate resilience using the established Seven-Steps methodology. By following these steps, schools will be able to systemically identify their vulnerabilities to natural hazards, develop and implement effective action plans, monitor and evaluate their progress and actively involve their communities in climate risk and management. The aim is to cultivate a culture of climate resilience and safety within their schools and communities.
Early Years Handbook
This handbook supports the establishment of the Eco-Schools programme in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings and contributes to achieving the target of the Greening Education Partnership (GEP). The simple seven-step framework guides the exploration of five Eco-Schools Early Years themes—waste, water, biodiversity, energy, and health—through action-based learning.
This approach connects schools, communities, and the environment, empowering young learners to develop environmental awareness and take an active role in creating a more sustainable world from the beginning of their educational journey.
Global Partnerships for Greening Education
The handbook materials are designed to be fully utilised, fostering inspiration for learners to become the environmental champions of tomorrow.
