Children for Children

Foundation for Environmental Education launched a campaign called ‘Children for Children’ to support and show solidarity to our own Eco-Schools Network

Watch the video made by YRE Alumni Kristin Rodrigo from Canada, based on materials delivered by BREEF (member of FEE) from The Bahamas, about the impact of hurricane Dorian

THE OVERALL AIM OF CHILDREN FOR CHILDREN CAMPAIGN

The recent hurricane Dorian has severely affected The Bahamas. There are reports of widespread destruction and casualties. It is estimated 70,000 people (20% of the population in The Bahamas) have been impacted, amongst them more than 18,000 children. Twelve Eco-Schools were destroyed and some of the teachers lost their lives. As the vulnerability of communities increases across the world, we need more efforts to reduce vulnerability, manage the impact along with mitigating risks.

This has convinced us to launch Children for Children campaign that will not only support the recovery and rehabilitation of the schools in The Bahamas, but will also educate for disaster risk reduction amongst vulnerable communities

FEE President Lesley Jones

Through its programmes, FEE has been supporting global efforts to educate children, youth and adults to increase awareness, shift mindsets and behaviour to mitigate climate change and the ever-growing strength and frequency of natural disasters. As a global network, FEE is in a position to mobilise support for rehabilitation particularly within the educational infrastructure.

The overall goal is to raise awareness on impacts of Climate Change and the increasing vulnerabilities to disasters and resources in cash for rebuilding the damaged Eco-Schools infrastructure in The Bahamas

CEO of FEE Daniel Schaffer

Campaign Objectives

  • Raise awareness on Climate Change

  • Provide education for disaster resilience

  • Create empathy and a sense of global citizenship

  • Mobilise the power of the network

  • Organise support in cash and kind for the recovery efforts of the twelve Eco-Schools in The Bahamas

 How the campaign works?

Schools from each country are invited to participate in this global campaign that will help educate students on Climate Change Risk Reduction and Resilience Education. Each action taken by schools will include a fundraising component for helping the recovery efforts children from affected Eco-Schools in The Bahamas.

Proposed Actions for Schools

  • Plan a campaign raising awareness on the impact of Climate Change and empathy with the support of educational materials available below. Raising awareness campaign should include fundraising activity for schools in The Bahamas.

  • Implement the campaign led by students.

  • Organise a Global Action Day 2020 that will focus on Climate Change Risk Reduction and Resilience Education.

  • Share stories from actions taken in the school - short case study with picture. Stories can present different aspects of activities e.g. planning actions, activities conducted or final results of the campaign.

  • YRE students can organise a media campaign raising awareness on climate change impact and report on activities organised in school in relation to support schools in The Bahamas.

In some cases, direct collaborations with students and schools from The Bahamas might be possible.

Useful educational materials for running a campaign in the schools are available here

Examples of fundraising activities to support the schools in The Bahamas

Schools can organise different actions to fundraise money for schools in The Bahamas. A few ideas are presented below:

-         Litter clean-up activities

-         Auction or sales by students during a Holiday event to include students of different faiths

-         Sports race connected to fundraising activities

-         Organise a charity event e.g. exhibition, talk on Climate Change topic by an expert

-         Organise a Global Action Day activity with fundraising component

- Recycling activity that will collect money for the donation etc.

Each school needs to follow the country law in case of public fundraising.
